High heeled obsessions

Why is it that most women will bear the discomforts of wearing high heels all in the name of fashion as opposed to the comfort of low sensible heels? Are they just being risk takers? Let's face it, in heels, we're leaner, sleeker and down right sexier.

Manolo Blahnik, Sergio Rossi and Jimmy Choo didn't make their fortunes playing it safe but by feeding our appetite and obsession for height and grandeur.Sex in the City siren, Sarah Jessica Parker, brazenly wore heels all through her pregnancy!! She defiantly wasn't going to be the quintessential pregnant woman, schlepping along in Birkenstocks.

They come in all shapes and sizes.... wedges, sling backs, 3 inchers, platforms and stilettos! They add that extra oomph to everything we wear, buba and iro, suits, jeans, cocktail dresses or bou-bous . Those stumpy legs suddenly don't look like tree trunks but instead appear leaner and elongated. Haven't you seen women trying on dresses and walking on their toes to get that imaginary effect? Optic illusion, you say? Yes, guys, high heels work certain magic.

We go from being ordinary woman to coquettish vixen

in a matter of moments. We transform from Plain Jane to Sissy Eko. Heels have a way of giving us that “I'm fly” persona. So much so that some women even categorize their heels according to their “potency.” For example, a two-inch heel can be referred to as the “ check me out ” shoe. A three incher, “ come and get me ” The killer/mother of all heels...the four inches plus are the wicked “ come and rock me shoes .”

A pair of heels for lack of a better analogy is like a woman's talisman. It makes us feel invincible and it emanates in our gait and ultimately our attitude. Women love high heels. Men similarly. Let's face it; men seem fixated with women in heels (some in just the heels alone, hello!). Gentlemen, you know who you are. It must be the way we walk in them (excluding those, of course, who haven't quite mastered the art of high heelin').

Let's not fool ourselves though; wearing high heels haven't gone without their perils. Women do experience some battle wounds or pains of the trade. Where do I begin? Bunions, calluses, corns, hammertoes, back aches, arthritis, Morton's Neuroma...should I go one? Harvard researcher D. Casey Kerrigan, MD, an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, tells WebMD. " Just wear flats. I am strongly against wearing heels at all, " says Kerrigan, who never wears them. " Throw them out, " she says, adding that women shouldn't be victims of fashion. Victims of fashion? Throw them out? For what alternative? Comfort Shoes, Comfort Zone or Keds? Correct me if I'm wrong but Keds and sex appeal just don't go hand in hand!

The health implications and disadvantages are valid though. I mean, how many times have we looked under a table at a reception or meeting to pick up the dropped pen or napkin to discover a bevy of bare feet getting a few precious moments of reprieve. Sometimes, I swear you can even see the steam rising from their vexing corns.

Fortunately or unfortunately, many of us will continue to be that proverbial fashion victim.... sashayin', struttin' and high heelin' our stuff.

Be aware that wearing heels bring attention to your feet, so here are some basic do's and don't's of high heelin':

DO get pedicures regulars.... ashy feet and beat up toes are a no-no (MOISTURIZE!)

DO wear heels that are your size, your toes shouldn't be sweeping the floor.

DON'T wear stilettos that can't support your weight.... if the heels bend when you walk, then those shoes aren't for you

DON'T wear strappy heels if you have a lot of corns ...your corns shouldn't be peek-a-boo'ing between the straps of your shoes.

DO keep nail polish at a clean and classic minimum, rhinestones and hot pink nail polish is overdoing it, less is more!

Until then ladies, keep your head up, shoulders back and work it!
