Fashion: Africana Style

Nouveau Fashion

African traditional attire has gone nuclear!

African designers are taking our traditional textiles to another level. It's not just your typical up and down any more…

Back in the day, women relied on European fashion to express their personal style, because African fashion seemed stagnant and boring. That is no longer the case. African fashion is new, exciting and continually evolving.

Visionaries

The work of designers like Nigerian based Deola Sagoe of Odua Creations, Kosibah of london, Gigi of Ethiopia, Oumou Sy of Senegal, Alphadi of Mali and so many more continue to push the limits set on African ready to wear.

A new marketplace

It's a new and exciting world for African designers.

Nowadays at important events the truly glamorous are not seen wearing European designers like Armani or Gianfranco Ferre. They are wearing stunning creations by local designers whose imagination and creativity seem unparalleled.

Even accessories are being transformed. Eme Bassey, a well-know Lagos milliner of John 3v3 hats, created fila oge and head piece inspired by traditional headtie.

It used to be that mothers had to beg their young daughters to wear traditional attires. Nowadays things have changed, it is considered très chic to wear fashionable george, aso-oke, lace, kente and so many more. We are combining our African heritage with our Western experience and creating looks that say, I am African and I am beautiful. How very Nouveau Africana!
