Those of you, who know me personally, know that Nouveau Africana is my first-born. I have been nurturing this baby; since I first found out I was pregnant with the idea. I use that terminology because one day I looked up and there she was, the concept of Nouveau Africana, just waiting for me to birth her.

This started out as an e-mail newsletter, then I attempted to put it online, however I believe that effort was somewhat premature and so my baby had to be put on some breathing machines and feeding tubes for a while, but like every good mother, I was by her side. Loving and nurturing her, thinking and implementing new ways to help her survive and thrive…and here we are! Breathing on our own!

Nouveau Africana is an online magazine for African women in the Diaspora. African women in the Diaspora contribute so much to the west, yet we are largely ignored. Isn’t it about time that there was a medium for African women to express themselves. A place where ideas can be shared and stories can be told? I think so! Nouveau Africana wants to be that place. We want to be that platform for you to be entertained and informed, and to connect to one another. We want to be that common ground. Nouveau Africana.com is a website where you can come and read articles written in the African woman’s voice. A voice that is unpretentious, witty, smart and conversational. It’s like your favorite girlfriend, you know the one who always tells you the truth, but in a loving way. The one who makes you laugh and who always gives you something to think about. The one who tells you where to get the most stylish outfits, what the best investments are, and how to find the best men.

Nouveau Africana will also be the meeting ground, with our new online community center. Where you can connect to one another, regardless of geographical constraints. Maybe you can find a long lost friend on the other side of the country. Maybe you can find a new friend, next door. The Western world is a different animal from our homeland. Nouveau Africana is a virtual home away from home.

As we start this process again, my baby will begin to grow, maybe toddle out on her own. I will desperately need your feedback in order to raise her right. If you like or don’t like the way she is going, or you want to see her write about something or add more to her repertoire, if you agree or disagree with a stance she has taken, please feel free to drop me a line. As they say back home, it takes a village to raise a child.
