nutritional supplements

Antioxidants refers to a group of organic compounds including vitamins A (from beta carotene), C and E. Together all these are said to protect against cancer, stroke and heart disease. Antioxidants deactivate free radicals at the cellular levels. Free radicals are created by internal cell processes and also by exposure to external factors like cigarette smoke. The natural tendency of free radicals is to seek oxidation. This oxidation process can potentially be carcinogenic. Antioxidants remove free radicals before they have a chance to do harm in your body. There are studies that show antioxidants help decrease the risk of lung cancer in smokers. Vitamin A has been shown to decrease the risk of breast cancer and vitamin C has been shown to neutralize potential cancer causing substances (nitrates) found in preserved meats etc.

Despite the studies that show benefits of antioxidants, some in the medical field feel that the benefit is not clearly defined. Also recognize that nutritional supplements are in no way an adequate substitute for a health diet. Experts still recommend a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

It is also important that we don't over do it when taking vitamins. Vitamin A and E are not water soluble, which means they are fat soluble and as such are stored in the bodies fat cells thus creating a toxicity risk.

Also please note do not take over the counter vitamin A when you are pregnant. It could potentially harm the fetus.

All being said and done, antioxidants are nature's protectors but it is best however if you can get your nutrition from natural food sources.
